Eli is eleven years old today. My silly doughnut and cat-loving child.
Eli loves lots of things! Animals, flowers, science, collecting chestnuts… he is one of those boys that you always find digging in the dirt.
An artist, a baker, a candlestick-maker. Eli is all of these things, too.
This year for Christmas he sewed new jingle bells onto his reindeer hat. He asked for a Lego bus, a giant Hershey kiss, a model train engine, and “a bag of peanuts with the shells on.” There is a lot of little boy still left in this eleven year old.
“Do you think if my pinkie touches the ground, my hands are still clean enough to eat my Skittles?”
“One candy corn in a bag of 660 has 659 brothers and sisters.”
“Aw, why do hiccups have to ruin my hot dogs!”
A lover of cartoons and comics, Eli likes books that have drawings, and recites facts that he gleans from the Guinness Book Of World Records and Weird But True. “Mom, did you know that…..?”
He has an uncanny memory for numbers and details, a trait he’s had since he was a baby, and like George Washington, he cannot tell a lie. Eli is the most honest kid we know.
Eli has also been an artist since he was a baby, and lately I’ve commissioned him to draw labels in my Wine Book instead of trying to peel them off the bottles. In restaurants, he stays busy by drawing cartoons and elaborate war scenes all over the place mats.
For his science project he designed a solar-powered cell phone charger, and at home I’m always finding household objects wrapped up in aluminum foil. Rocks, coins, old batteries…. and Snap Circuits on the kitchen table.
When watching an ice-skating show at the Rathaus, Eli observed that “I wouldn’t want that guy’s job. I’m afraid that I would mess up and whack the lady on the ice.”
Eli is a thinker. We’re not always sure what’s going on in there, but he definitely sees life with his own eyes.
He isn’t finished carving his pumpkin until he sees what it looks like with the lights off.
For dessert, he likes dark chocolate, and likes his pie to have a lattice on top.
He loves cats.
This year we went to Budapest, Prague, Ljubljana, Rovinj, Assisi, Modena and Vaduz, and here is Eli in Venice where he took this black and white photo of the gondolas.
